What is copper enameling?

In simple terms, it's glass on metal. The process starts with copper or silver sheeting, stamped shapes, or spun forms. Metal is scrubbed and fired and scrubbed again until shiny and clean and perfect. Each piece is then coated in fine powdered enamel, layer on layer. Inside a kiln at 1500 Fahrenheit it sublimates. In just a few minutes what was once like sand is now permanently fused to its base; strong, smooth and shining. The piece is fired over and over. With each addition of color or embellishment, each painting or sifting of designs and each swirl of molten enamel it must be fired, cooled and cleaned once more. The final result is well worth the process.
